How high is my Ford Transit, what length is my Transit, how wide is my Transit van, these are all questions you’ll find out in our Ford Transit dimensions fact sheet.
You’re here because you want to know about the Ford Transit measurements. Maybe you’re moving something really large and need to know if it will fit, or maybe you’re worried about a car park height restriction, well this is the place to learn the Transit van size.
Stick with us, and you’ll find out everything you need to know, but to make it easier we’ve put headings in for the Ford Transit height, width and length – scroll down to see those. You can also find out the interior Ford Transit dimensions for the loadspace.
The most commonly asked questions we get are...
The most common size Ford Transit is either 2.49m / 2490mm high for a standard H2 van or 2.78m / 2780mm for a long wheelbase H3.
Length ranges from 5.53m to 6.7m, width is 2.47m and height ranges from 2.49m to 2.79m.
The basics are that the Transit van is available in three lengths, medium-, long- and extra-long-wheelbase which Ford calls L2, L3 and L4. You'll notice there is no short-wheelbase, that's reserved for the Ford Transit Custom dimensions.
There are also two heights – standard and high roof – which are referred to as H2 and H3.
Look at the headings in the table below to see what we mean about the name used for its interior size and the Ford Transit dimensions.
The information below relates to the Ford Transit van launched in 2014 and is the model currently on sale.
As you can see in the table, the average Ford Transit van ranges from 5.5m in length to 6.7m. Depending on the roof option, the Ford Transit height is from just below 2.5m to fractionally under 2.8m.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Ford Transit has a load volume ranging from 10m3 to 15.1m3.
The sill loading height – that’s the distance from the ground to the lip of the back doors – is generally just over 60cm or 613mm in the lowest and 722mm in the highest – that’s because that van is only available as rear-wheel-drive (RWD) which adds a lot to the loading height.
The same is true for the all-wheel-drive (AWD) models. If you have either a RWD or AWD Transit you should subtract 100mm off the loadspace height and 0.5m3 from the load volume.
Looking for the dimensions of the medium-sized van the Ford Transit Custom?
The Ford Transit has an overall height of 2490mm for the H2 van which increases to 2780mm for the H3 vans.
That means a standard height van should be able to fit beneath a 2.5m height restriction, and a high roof van will get under a 2.8m restriction. Not that many of those exist.
It’s worth noting that when it comes to heights the size of the wheels can make all the difference.
If your van is entirely standard you should have nothing to worry about, but if you’ve change the wheels or upgraded the tyres these numbers may vary slightly. If in doubt, don’t drive into that height restriction.
The Ford Transit loadspace height is different to the overall height because this is the space within the cargo area of the van.
The important measurements for the Transit loadspace height are 1886mm for the H2 van and 2125mm for the H3 van. Rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models lose 100mm (10cm) in loadspace height.
You’ll often need to know the width of a van because of a restricted road or parking space size. The Ford Transit width is 2474mm at its very widest overall dimensions.
That’s a measurement from mirror to mirror and is the same for all vans. If you fold the mirrors back the Ford Transit measures 2112mm. If you just need to know how wide the body is, then by itself without mirrors, it is 2059mm.
The maximum loadspace width of the Ford Transit van is 1784mm, and is the same for all types of Transit van.
Ford Transit vans are well known as being big vans, and rightly so because they range from 5531mm for the L2 vans, with L3 vans being 5981mm and the L4 van being 6704mm long.
That’s a pretty big van but as you’ll see from the loadspace lengths it does make it very practical. Ford also does a range of chassis cabs which go up to L5 in length.
The Transit L5 is officially designated as the ELWB-EF which stands for Extra-Long-Wheelbase-Extended-Frame.
The maximum loadspace length at the floor level with a fixed bulkhead of the Ford Transit is 3044 mm for the L2 van. The Ford Transit L3 has 3494mm lengthways and the L4 has room for 4217mm.
That’s a monstrous amount of storage at its longest points, with over 3m as standard and just under 3.5mm in the middle van and more than 4.2m on the biggest models.
We’ve already covered the interior Ford Transit dimensions for its width. What that doesn’t take into account that the wheels intrude into the loadspace a bit.
While technically the maximum width is 1784mm if you are moving something really big or need to move palleted goods the important dimension is the width between the wheelarches. The dimensions for the Ford Transit between its wheels is 1392mm.
Just so you know, the size of a standard UK pallet is 1200mm x 1000mm. The slightly smaller Euro pallets measure 1200 x 800mm. Both types of pallet will comfortable fit between the wheelarches and in the case of the Euro pallet you will be able to put two side by side.
You can comfortable fit four Euro pallets in the short- and medium-wheelbase vans. Up to five Euro pallets can fit in the long-wheelbase Transit model.
We’ve mentioned MWB vans, which is referring to the Ford Transit medium wheelbase or L2 model. It is the smallest of the Ford Transit vans in length. It is available with a low (standard) or high roof. For the low roof vans there is a 10.0 cubic metre load volume and 11.2 cubic metres on the high roof.
The Ford Transit wheelbase measures 3,300mm and the load area measures 2,946mm at the floor. The front overhang for the Ford Transit is 1023mm and the rear overhang is 1208mm.
That’s the measurement from the middle of the wheel to the very front and rear of the van, respectively.
Transit Medium Wheelbase Van (L2) | Metric (mm) | Imperial (feet) |
---|---|---|
Overall Length | 5531 | 18'2" |

Interior Load Width Between Wheelarches | 1392 | 4'6" |
The Ford Transit long wheelbase (LWB) also has low or high roof options. The L3 van has an extended wheelbase of 3,750mm and measures 3,494mm on the cargo floor.
Load volumes are measured at 11.5 cubic metres on the low roof and 13.0 cubic metres on the high.
Transit Long Wheelbase Van (L3) | Metric (mm) | Imperial (feet) |
---|---|---|
Overall Length | 5931 | 19'46" |
Overall Width | 2059 | 6'7" |

The Ford Transit ELWB or extra long-wheelbase is available with the high roof (H3) option only and it uses the same 3,750mm wheelbase as the LWB van.
The difference is in the rear overhang. This has been extended to provide 4,217mm worth of load length. Load volume for the ELWB Ford Transit is 15.1 cubic metres as there is only one roof height – the H3 model - and it is only available as a RWD van which increases the rear loading height and eats into the loadspace volume slightly – by 0.5m3 and 100mm in internal height.
Transit Extra Long Wheelbase Van (L4) | Metric (mm) | Imperial (feet) |
---|---|---|
Overall Length | 6704 | 21'10" |
Overall Width | 2059 | 6'7" |
Overall Height | 2790 | 9'2" |
Interior Load Length | 4217 | 13'9" |
Interior Load Width | 1784 | 5'9" |
Interior Load Height | 2025 | 6'6" |

And here's a nice graphical representation of most of the Transit dimensions from above.
Load volume is the important number that represents just how much space is available in the back of the van.
The Ford Transit van has a load volume of between 10m3 to 15.1m3.
Below is the table of what load volume each Ford Transit van has. It starts with the smallest possible Transit van up to the largest:
Ford Transit size | Body Size & Height | Load Volume |
---|---|---|
Medium Wheelbase, Standard Roof | L2H2 | 10m3 |
Medium Wheelbase, High Roof | L2H3 | 11.2m3 |
Long Wheelbase, Standard Roof | L3H2 | 11.5m3 |
Long Wheelbase, High Roof | L3H3 | 13m3 |
Extra Long Wheelbase, High Roof | L4H3 | 15.1m3 |
And Finally.... often asked question is:
The biggest Ford Transit panel van is not bigger than the largest Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
