Ineos Automotive is pushing the Grenadier further into the defence sector after securing orders from the Italian Army and Austrian Government, while also progressing to the trials stage of a British Ministry of Defence programme.

The Italian Army has placed what Ineos describes as a substantial order for Grenadiers, while Austria has awarded a contract for enhanced-protection versions of the 4x4. Italy is the first NATO country to place a sizable order for its military with the Grenadier.

Ineos says the Grenadier is already in use with police, border patrol, special forces and emergency rescue organisations around the world. The latest contracts move the vehicle more firmly into military applications.

The company has also been selected to proceed to trials for a UK Ministry of Defence contract for a new Light Mobility Vehicle.

Mike Whittington, chief commercial officer at Ineos Automotive, said: “In a world where geopolitical tensions are rising, military forces are bolstering their capabilities and resilience, they need the best, modern equipment available. As a robust and highly capable vehicle, this is what the Grenadier was built for – to unremittingly serve armed forces in mission-critical roles.”

Find out: Who is Ineos?

The Grenadier’s ladder-frame chassis, permanent four-wheel drive and heavy-duty construction have made it a natural candidate for specialist conversions, with Ineos increasingly targeting government, emergency service and defence fleets alongside its civilian customer base.

Manufacturers are bidding to be the winners of a lucrative MoD contract to replace the Land Rover Wolf Series, with Ford, Ineos and many others lining up for the tender.

The Grenadier is already being used by police, border patrols, special forces and emergency rescue services around the world, from elite counterterrorism and tactical intervention units in Germany, France and Spain as well as for security and border forces, in Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Serbia and Slovakia.
