Chery has underlined just how quickly it is becoming a force to be reckoned with ahead of its highly anticipated van debut at the IAA Transportation show in Hannover next month.

Less than a year after launching in the UK, the Chinese manufacturer captured a record 2% share of the new car market in July, registering 3,212 vehicles.

The milestone comes just weeks before Chery is expected to unveil its first dedicated light commercial vehicle, the Delivan, at IAA Transportation in September, where it will reveal how it intends to challenge Europe’s established van manufacturers.

Chery’s UK growth has been driven largely by electrified models, which accounted for more than 70% of July registrations. Leading the charge was the plug-in hybrid TIGGO 8 CSH, which recorded 1,117 registrations during the month.

The UK performance reflects the expansion of Chery Group worldwide, and is now ranked as the world’s ninth-largest automotive group by sales volume, with a 4.1% share of global deliveries, on a par with Ford.

Chery says it also became the first Chinese manufacturer to surpass 20 million cumulative vehicle sales and the first to export more than 200,000 vehicles in a single month.

Chery has now broken the monthly overseas sales record for a Chinese vehicle manufacturer for five consecutive months, with July exports reaching 202,533 vehicles.

From January to July, international deliveries totalled 1.146 million vehicles, a 71.2% increase year-on-year, while European deliveries surged 212% to 174,000 units.

Farrell Hsu, MD of Chery UK, said: "Reaching a 2% share of the UK market in July is a significant milestone, and one we’ve achieved in less than a year. This reflects just how quickly UK customers have embraced Chery, and the exceptional value, usability and quality our vehicles deliver."

"This momentum is underpinned by the incredible strength of Chery Group. In the first half of this year, the company ranked among the world’s top 10 automotive groups and became the first from China to surpass a total of 20 million sales globally."

“This scale gives us the resources and expertise to design and develop exceptional vehicles with all the features and technologies that customers want as standard, yet offer them at attainable prices.”
