More fleets are considering buying used vans as a way of coping with increasing costs.
That's according to a new survery from Arval, with more than a third planning to purchase second hand vans within the next three years.
The 2025 Arval Mobility Observatory Fleet and Mobility Barometer reveals that while 13% of fleets currently operate some used vans, a further 36% intend to buy used vans by 2028.
That would mean that nearly half (49%) of UK fleets are either already using or planning to use second-hand vans within the next three years.
John Peters, head of Arval Mobility Observatory in the UK, said: "Taken together, these figures indicate that 49% of fleets are either operating used vans or intend to do so, which is a significant percentage.
“What is interesting here is to compare the van findings with the corresponding figures for cars. With 47% of fleets already having used cars and 22% planning to add more, the level of adoption is much higher," Peters said.
“It may also be the case that some plan to turn to the used sector for diesel vans to circumvent the growing electric van supply that will result from the Zero Emissions Vehicle Mandate towards as the decade progresses,” Peters added.
The Arval Mobility Observatory Barometer indicates a consistent level of interest in used vans across businesses of all sizes.
Small companies (those with 1-99 employees) show 11% already operating used vans and 36% planning to buy more, while medium (100-999 employees) and large companies (1,000+ employees) show similar figures of 12%/37% and 17%/36% respectively.
The UK's total of 49% of fleets already operating or planning to buy used vans is lower than in several comparable European countries. Germany, France, and Italy show significantly higher figures at 64%, 63%, and 53% respectively.
