Van driver in serious condition after boulder dropped from bridge

November 30, 2024

A van driver is in a serious condition suffering from serious head injuries after a rock smashed through his windscreen.

According to police, the object was dropped from a bridge, crossing over the A617, near Rainworth, in Nottinghamshire.

The incident is said to have happened at about 22:00 on Friday, Nottinghamshire Police said.

The driver, a 26 year-old man, was in a silver Ford Transit van when the large rock went through the windscreen striking them in the process.

Police have decided it as a mindless and abhorrent act that is being treated very seriously.

The man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries, while the road remained closed. It stayed shut throughout Saturday morning, reopening to traffic at around 13:30 GMT.

The closure on the A617 was between the roundabout at Kirklington Road and the junction with the A6191.

Police are seeking witnesses or drivers with dashcam footage.

Nottingham has recently been named as one of the most dangerous areas in the country for vehicle accidents.

The city appeared ninth on a list of the most dangerous places to drive outside of London.

It has an average collision rate of 722 accidents per billion miles driven.

Blackpool topped with list with an average of 976, while Kingston upon Hull, and the Isles of Scilly rounded out the top three.

Luton came fourth, followed by Brighton, Southampton, Reading and Blackburn. Liverpool was tenth on the list.

Moray, in Scotland, is statistically the safest area.

According to the research London has an average of 1,090 collisions per billion road miles travelled.
