What is the Ford E-Transit battery range?

Ford E-Transit Battery Charging and Range
August 5, 2025

Knowing the Ford E-Transit range will likely form a critical part of your buying decision because if you're van won't go anywhere, nor can you.

The E-Transit driving range determines the van's operational viability, ensuring it can complete a full day's work without the need for unplanned stops or a mid-day recharge. In this guide we'll look at the E-Transit battery capacity and how it directly impacts its range.

We'll also cover how quickly it can be recharged, as well as the size of the batteries in the E-Transit.

Ford's strategy with the E-Transit focuses on providing a practical range that meets the daily needs of van drivers. Read on to find out if the Ford E-Transit range is enough for you and your needs.

What is the Ford E-Transit range?

The Ford E-Transit's range varies depending on the model year and battery configuration.

Ford's strategy is based on its data that the average daily van driver typically only drives less than 75 miles (120km), which as a large electric van, the E-Transit is designed to comfortably exceed.

Early Models (2022-2023): 68 kWh Battery

These models had an estimated real world range of 126 miles (203km), however, under the European WLTP testing standard, the range was rated at up to 350km (approximately 217 miles).

During our own testing we've found that the E-Transit will comfortably cover at least 150 miles in all conditions and with varying payloads on board.

2024 onwards: 89 kWh Battery

This larger battery was added as an option for new E-Transits from 2024. It's the only battery size on some of the larger models, but can be specified as an option on most versions of the van.

It provides an improved real world estimated range of up to 159 miles (256 km) while the WLTP range for these models is up to 402 km (249 miles).

Our limited testing of the 89kWh battery in the very largest L4 panel van confirms that there is a significant increase in the range. However, it would fall short of the 249 miles claimed maximum. We'd estimate the range of a working E-Transit with the big battery to be around 185 to 210 miles, depending on the weight and overall dimensions of the E-Transit.

It is important to note that the real-world range can be influenced by a number of factors, including payload, driving speed, ambient temperature, and the use of auxiliary power for heating or air conditioning.

What size battery does the Ford E-Transit have?

Ford evolved the battery size of the E-Transit electric van adding a larger battery pack to compliment the launch models.

Early Models (2022-2023): The E-Transit was initially equipped with a usable battery capacity of 68 kWh.

2024 onwards: The larger 89 kWh usable battery pack was introduced for the 2024 model year and has become the exclusive option for the very largest E-Transit configurations.

The E-Transit's battery system uses advanced Nickel Cobalt Manganese (NCM) pouch cells, chosen for their high energy density and lightweight design.

What speed does the Ford E-Transit charge at?

The E-Transit charging capabilities have been designed to suit the various needs of the diverse range of customers Ford has for its Transits. That's why there is both slow AC charging and faster DC charging as standard on all vans.

AC Charging: The vehicle comes with a standard 11.3kW onboard charger.

For the 68kWh battery, a full charge from 0-100% takes approximately 8.2 hours.

For the larger 89 kWh battery, a full charge using an 80A Level 2 charger can be completed in about 6 hours and 11 minutes.

DC Fast Charging: This is the fastest way to charge the E-Transit with speeds of up to 180kW.

Earlier models had a peak DC charging rate of 115 kW, allowing for a 15-80% charge in just 34 minutes.

The enhanced models (2024-onwards) feature a higher peak DC rate of 176 kW.

With this, a 10-80% charge can be achieved in approximately 28 minutes, adding an estimated 67 miles (108km) of range in just 15 minutes.
