KGM Motors UK has launched the all-new Torres Hybrid, expanding its SUV line-up with a model that bridges the gap between petrol and electric power. But with its rugged design, practicality, and hybrid efficiency, could the Torres Hybrid could follow the Rexton in gaining a Commercial variant aimed at business users?
The brand, formerly SsangYong, has form in this department. The KGM Rexton Commercial, a UK conversion of KGM’s flagship SUV, has proven popular among professionals and trades who need the comfort of a premium SUV with the tax efficiency of a van.
Given the Torres Hybrid’s 1,662 litres of cargo space, durable ladder-frame construction and towing capability of 1.3 tonnes, the blueprint for a Torres Hybrid Commercial appears to be already in place.
Kevin Griffin, MD of KGM Motors UK, said the new model “marks the beginning of KGM’s continued expansion into eco-friendly vehicles, supported by new products and advanced powertrain options in the near future.”
KGM’s established track record in creating professional-grade commercial variants might suggest a hybrid-powered load-lugger could easily be the next evolution of the Torres platform.
The Torres Hybrid gets a Dual Tech Hybrid System developed with BYD, combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with dual electric motors to deliver 177hp and achieve up to 46.1mpg.
The setup allows for EV-only operation at city speeds, and nine selectable drive modes adapt performance for different terrains.
Inside, the Torres Hybrid’s cabin there’s heated and ventilated leather seats, dual 12.3-inch screens, and 32-colour ambient lighting.
However, its 300mm wading depth and best-in-class cargo capacity make it an ideal candidate for LCV conversion.
If a Torres Hybrid Commercial does arrive, it could give KGM a unique foothold in the UK market, offering fleets and SMEs a tax-efficient hybrid SUV-van at a time when diesel options are tightening and electric vans still face infrastructure barriers.
For now, the standard Torres Hybrid is available in the UK from £35,995, joining the petrol and all-electric Torres EVX on sale.
