Thermo King has begun production of a new line of all-electric refrigeration units for refrigerated vans.
The new E-100e, E-200e and E-200e Spectrum units, developed by the Trane Technologies brand, are designed for use in vans and light commercial vehicles up to 12m³.
The new models are a significant improvements over previous generations, including up to 20% lower energy consumption and a 50% increase in heating capacity.
Weight has also been reduced, with units now up to 32% lighter, which the company says will help to maximise payload for delivery businesses.
The all-aluminium frame and compact design are also intended to improve reliability and simplify installation.
The refrigeration systems are compatible with both battery electric vans (BEV) and traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. For BEVs, the units can connect directly to the vehicle's low-voltage e-PTO or a vehicle-to-load connection, minimising the impact on the electric van's driving range.
Graham Wells, product manager for small trucks at Thermo King in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said: "With the new E-Series we are raising the bar. Their lightweight design helps maximise payload, while integrated technology and zero direct emissions support the transition to sustainable, electrified and decarbonised last-mile."
The new units also include integrated telematics connectivity as standard, providing businesses with real-time data to optimise operations.
Their low-noise and zero-direct-emission operation make them suitable for use in restricted low-emission zones, both day and night.
Thermo King says the new E-Series provides powerful and consistent cooling, rapid temperature pulldown, and the ability to maintain a precise temperature even when the vehicle is stationary. This "holdover" capability is vital for ensuring the integrity of temperature-sensitive goods during stops.
The E-Series heat pump architecture, utilising reverse cycle technology, delivers powerful cooling as well as efficient heating and defrosting, with the E-200e model said to have a 50% increase in heating capacity.
