Campervans are taking over the roads and the hearts of caravanning enthusiasts, according to a survery at the 2025 International Caravanning Show.
According to a survey conducted during the first weekend of the show at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue, three out of four visitors showed a clear preference for campervans and motorhomes over traditional caravans.
The poll reveals that 75% of attendees interested in purchasing a new vehicle would choose either a motorhome (40.5%) or a campervan (34.5%), leaving just one in four loyal to the classic towing wobble box caravan.
The findings mirror a wider shift in the caravanning industry, where models with integrated engines are driving the market’s growth with models like the Volkswagen California proving ever more popular.
Accessories also proved a major draw at this year’s show, followed by innovative alternatives such as tiny houses, tents, and trailers.
The survey further highlights the increasing presence of families in the caravanning community, with 72.4% of respondents saying they plan to travel with their partner and children, echoing the growing family tourism trend in the sector.
Industry data from the Spanish Association of the Caravanning Industry and Commerce (ASEICAR) supports these findings. In 2024, nearly 85% of new recreational vehicle registrations were for campervans and motorhomesm, a total of 11,820 units, evenly split between the two categories.
While both types appeal to adventure-seekers, their typical buyers differ. Campervans tend to attract couples with more modest budgets seeking flexibility and freedom, whereas motorhomes are often chosen by experienced caravanners or families who value space, comfort, and can afford a higher price point.
Increased demand for customised van conversions was also highlighted as a trend in the survery, with a focus on sustainability and fuel efficiency. There's also growing interest in electric models and smart-home-style technology within motorhomes.
Organised by Fira de Barcelona, the International Caravanning Show features more than 700 models from brands across Europe.
