The London EV Company’s electric TX taxi has helped reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from London’s black cab fleet by 59%, playing a major role in transforming London’s air quality.

New analysis by London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) shows the petrol electric hybrid TX has prevented more than 15,000kgs of NOx from entering the air each year with more than 9,000 TXs are now in operating across the capital.

Thanks to its eCity powertrain, which is shares with the LEVC VN5, the TX emits 94% less NOx than the older diesel-powered TX4 model.

Globally, the TX fleet has helped prevent an estimated 78,000 kg of harmful NOx and more than 360 million kg of CO₂ from being released into the atmosphere since its launch in 2018, supported by more than £1bn of investment from LEVC’s parent company, Geely.

The health benefits of cleaner air are profound, according to a study by Imperial College London estimated that between 3,600 and 4,100 deaths in 2019 were attributable to air pollution in Greater London, with the city potentially gaining 6.1m life years if pollution concentrations were reduced.

LEVC’s TX has been instrumental in that progress. In 2022, taxis accounted for just 21.7% of all NOx emissions from road transport in Central London, less than the total contribution from vans.

Since then, more than 4,300 additional electric TXs have replaced older diesels, driving emissions down even further.

Recent data from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirms that London met NO₂ Air Quality Standards for the first time in 2024, with LEVC’s TX taxis playing a central role in helping the city meet this milestone.

Chris Allen, MD at LEVC, said: “Designed, engineered and manufactured from the ground up in the UK to be the world’s most advanced electric taxi, the TX is the ideal vehicle for drivers, passengers, the planet and our capital city."

"Millions of Londoners are now breathing cleaner air thanks to the rapid growth of the zero-emission-capable TX, which has delivered a substantial reduction in both local pollutants and total emissions across the black cab fleet,” said Allen.

The TX offers a pure electric range of up to 78 miles and a total range of 333 miles with its range extender, making it ideally suited for taxi duty cycles and longer commutes.

With around 5,300 diesel taxis still operating in London, LEVC is urging drivers and councils to continue the transition to cleaner vehicles as each new TX emits 17 times less NOx than its diesel predecessor.
