The new Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) version of the new Kia van has made its UK debut as part of theFinancial Times’ Future of the Car Summit.
Kia had previously unveiled the vehicle at its EV Day 2025, alongside the Kia PV5 Cargo and Kia PV5 Passenger models, as well as annoucing the upcoming Kia PV7 and Kia PV9.
The unveiling is part of Kia's ambition to be a leader in sustainable mobility solutions.
Sangdae Kim, executive vice president and head of Kia’s PBV Division, described the PV5 WAV as "more than just a vehicle".
“By integrating cutting-edge Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) technology with thoughtful design, we are paving the way for a future where everyone can enjoy the benefits of sustainable mobility, and our partnership with Motability Operations is a testament to our commitment to making this vision a reality,” Sangdae Kim added.
The PV5 WAV uses a side-entry system that allows wheelchair users to board safely from the pavement.
It also includes a third-row tip-up seat, enabling caregivers to assist wheelchair passengers from the side.
There's also a quick-use, 300kg-rated wheelchair entry ramp and a specially developed wheelchair belt fastening system.
The PV5 WAV side-entry variant will be manufactured at Kia’s Hwaseong EVO Plant in Korea, using the company’s Made-In-Plant system for converting vehicles.
PV5 WAV models will also integrate the necessary applications for individuals with disabilities, based on the Android Auto open software platform.
The PV5 WAV is an example of how Kia is looking to fill additional niche markets with its new van, targeting sectors that have often been forgotten about as the industry moves away from traditional petrol and diesel vehicles.
Kia has a history of initiatives aimed at enhancing accessible mobility, including the "Green Trip" project in South Korea and a universal mobility research project in Los Angeles.
The PV5 WAV is designed to offer greater freedom of movement for wheelchair users, their families, caregivers, and drivers.
Kia will also collaborate with Motability Operations, the UK's largest vehicle leasing company, which provides affordable and accessible vehicles to those receiving a qualifying disability allowance.
