New medium Ram ProMaster City launches in the US

Ram is preparing to re-enter the compact commercial van market in the United States with a medium van, bringing back the ProMaster City.

Unveiled at the Work Truck Week commercial vehicle show, new Ram ProMaster City is expected to arrive in early 2027, and marks a revival of the brand’s smallest van after the previous ProMaster City, a rebadged Fiat Doblo, disappeared from the North American market in 2022, leaving a gap beneath the larger ProMaster in Ram’s commercial vehicle line-up.

Stellantis' latest new van is aimed squarely at tradesmen, small businesses and fleet operators in a smaller footprint medium sized van, to reduced costs.

The 2027 model is a complete reset for the nameplate with the earlier ProMaster City being based on the Fiat Doblo. The new version adopts a different Stellantis platform shared with European vans such as the Fiat Scudo, Citroen Dispatch, Peugeot Expert and Vauxhall Vivaro. It's also produced for and sold by Iveco and Toyota as the Iveco eJolly and the Toyota Proace.

The new Ram ProMaster City is therefore a much larger model than the previous generation and will offer a maximum payload of one tonne (2,175lb) and a towing capacity of up to 900kg (2,000lb).

Power comes from a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 166hp and 221lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels.

The 2027 ProMaster City gets 167 cubic feet of loadspace, with a cargo length of around 9ft 3in and a width of 48.9-inches between the wheel arches, allowing it to carry standard pallets or sheet. It also has a 23.2-inch step-in height, designed to make loading tools, equipment and packages easier throughout the working day.

It has an overall height of roughly 77 inches, allowing the ProMaster City to fit inside many parking garages that would be off-limits to larger vans.

Ram will offer the van in both cargo and passenger configurations, with Tradesman and SLT trims available.

Passenger versions can be configured with five or eight seats, and the rear seating rows can be removed to create additional cargo space when needed.

Cargo models, meanwhile, can be specified with either 180-degree rear swing doors or a liftgate, along with multiple panel and window combinations to suit different business uses.

Inside, the ProMaster City will have a modern digital cabin with a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and safety technologies including forward-collision warning with active braking, electronic stability control and a rear-view camera.
