Mercedes-Benz has revealed the first details of its all-new VLE people mover, which will form the base for the next generation of Mercedes electric vans.
The VLE is the first model to sit on its newly developed VAN.EA platform, a modular and scalable skateboard which will be the underpinnings for the next generation of eSprinter and eVito.
The new VLE is a premium multi-purpose vehicle, and replacement for the EQV, designed to bridge the gap between limousine refinement and a full-size MPV. Mercedes says the new VLE combines high levels of ride comfort, safety and handling with space and flexibility, with room for up to eight people.
Merc says the model line-up cater for a wide range of uses, from family and leisure-focused variants through to more exclusive shuttle configurations.

VLE gets a 115 kWh battery which should see it have a range in excess of 350 miles.
Other features announced ahead of the official unveiling early next month include rear-axle steering, with a maximum steering angle of 7-degrees.
The system works in conjunction with a more direct steering ratio at the front axle, delivering improved turning without compromising the passenger van's high-speed stability. It also gives the VLE a curb-to-curb turning circle of just 10.9m, with a wall-to-wall figure of 11.6m.

That puts it on par with the new Mercedes-Benz CLA. Not bad for a much larger medium van sized vehicle.
The more direct steering ratio will also reduces the number of turns needed to apply full lock, making the VLE easier to maneouvre at low-speeds and when parking.
Opinion: Why the new Merc VLE steering matters
As you'd expect, Mercedes-Benz says the VLE will come with a comprehensive package of safety and driver assistance systems, as standard.
As well as an all-electric model, Mercedes has adapted their VAN.EA (Electric Architecture) to house a combustion engine, with VAN.CA (Combustion Architecture) models set to mirror the EV line-up.
