Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK has reintroduced one of its most recognisable nameplates, with the Caravelle returning to the line-up as the brand’s flagship people carrier van.
The move will see the Caravelle badge replace the outgoing Multivan name in the UK market, marking the return of a model name that has been closely associated with Volkswagen passenger transport for more than 40 years.
Volkswagen says the decision brings the UK range more closely into line its global naming strategy while capitalising on the strong recognition the Caravelle name.
The Caravelle name first appeared on the T3 generation in 1979. Known in the UK as the T25, it was the first Volkswagen Transporter derivative to carry the Caravelle badge and was developed specifically as a passenger-focused model.
At a time when purpose-built multi-seat vehicles were still relatively uncommon, the Caravelle introduced a practical seven-seat layout and a higher level of comfort and equipment than many of its contemporaries. Over subsequent generations it established itself as one of Europe’s best-known people carriers, serving everyone from large families to executive transport operators.
Volkswagen believes the return of the Caravelle name will make it easier for customers to understand the brand’s passenger vehicle offering while drawing on a heritage that stretches back more than four decades.
The announcement follows a wider trend across the industry with manufacturers reviving established model names, rather than introducing entirely new branding. Renault has recently introduced the Renault 4, Renault 5 and Renault Twingo, all which have spawned commercial vehicle versions.

David Hanna, MD of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK, said the Caravelle name still holds considerable value among British customers.
“Bringing the Caravelle name back to the UK was essential, it is firmly anchored in people’s minds as to what it offers, a premium multi-seat vehicle, with the unmistakable Volkswagen logo at the front,” Hanna said.
“There are many brands that can offer similar products, but they cannot match our heritage. Resurrecting these well-known names that are trusted and loved by British consumers also reflects the wider approach of the Volkswagen Group,” he added.
Full UK specifications and pricing are expected to be announced closer to launch, but VW says the new Caravelle will carry forward the values that have defined previous generations, combining passenger comfort, versatility and practicality in a package aimed at both private and professional users.
