Volkswagen has unveiled a new special edition campervan to celebrate two decades of its popular California Beach model.
The VW California Beach Camper Energy will be officially revealed at the Caravan Salon trade show in Düsseldorf, Germany, next week, and promises to be a more feature-packed version of the Multivan-California crossover.
The first Beach model from Volkswagen was originally called the Multivan Beach and was launched in 2005 as a versatile vehicle for both daily use and weekend getaways.
It was a stripped-back version of the full-spec VW California camper, with a more affordable entry price point into VW's line-up of campervans.
The new special edition marks the 20-year milestone and includes a wide range of extra features as standard. The Beach Camper Energy gets auxiliary heating, an awning, 17-inch Dundrod alloy wheels, and a three-zone air conditioning system.
The Energy equipment specification also includes a lighting package with Light Assist main-beam control and dynamic headlight range control. It gets heated front seats and the heated multifunction leather steering wheel with paddles and Energy logo.
It also comes with advanced driver assistance technology, including Travel Assist and a comprehensive parking package with a rearview camera as standard.
Since its inception, the Beach has evolved, with a pop-up roof becoming a standard feature in 2009 and a compact kitchenette being added as an option in 2019. The new model's name, "Energy," is a nod to its focus on providing a more equipped and comfortable experience for travellers.
The California Ocean is also available as a special "Energy" model.
The latest version, on which the special edition is based, is built on Volkswagen's MQB platform used in a range of VW Group passenger cars as well as the Volkswagen Multivan.
Also on display at the Caravan Salon will be the updated version of the Grand California. The big California camper has undergone a tech boost in its next generation.
Pre-sales are set to begin during the show, which is on from August 29th to September 7th, 2025.
