You've come looking for the Ford Transit Custom van weight or its maximum payload and in this guide we'll explain all the numbers for Britain's most popular medium sized van.
The Ford Transit Custom payload range is enormous because it is available in many different versions.
From a short wheelbase standard roof with a low gross vehicle weight through to a long-wheelbase model with high GVW. That means there are plenty of different variations for the van weight and the total permitted payload of the Transit Custom van.
In this guide we'll look at the possible gross vehicle weights, the maximum permitted payloads, the kerb weight, and the front and rear axle weights. If you need to know how big the van is then there's a seperate guide to the Ford Transit Custom dimensions and if you're here for towing information then there's also a seperate guide on the Ford Transit Custom towing capacity.
Importantly, this is the payload guide for the second generation of Ford Transit Custom, the van that was introduced in 2024. If you're looking for the first generation Transit Custom payload from (2012 to 2024) then we have those too.
Like the first generation van, the latest Ford Transit Custom comes in a wide range of gross vehicle weights.
They range from 2.8 tonnes to 3.2 tonnes with Transit Custom 280, 300 and 320 weights.
The 280 Transit Custom vans have a GVW of 2825kg, while the 300 Transit Custom models have a GVW of 3025kg. The largest 320 Transit Customs have a gross vehicle weight mass of 3225kg.
Kerb weights vary based on the size and specification of the vans. The lighest Ford Transit Custom models have a weight of 1,809kg, this is for a 280 L1H1 van. Specifying the Transit Custom with an automatic transmission will result in added weight of around 35 to 40kg, while going up from an L1 body size to an L2 wheelbase will add around 45kg to the overall weight.
The heaviest Transit Custom van weight is 2076kg, which is the kerbweight for an all-wheel-drive model with an automatic transmission and long-wheelbase.
The front axle weights vary for the Transit Custom according to GVW, wheelbase length and even if there is a manual or automatic gearbox.
The maximum front axle weight for a L1H1 van is 1550kg. The L2 wheelbase vans have a front axle weight of 1600kg. Occasionally adding an automatic transmission can add an additional 25kg to the permitted front axle weight - this is true of the 300 and 320 vans with longwheelbases - which increases their front axle weights to 1625kg.
The highest front axle weight is reserved for the 320 L2 models with automatic transmissions. These have a maximum permitted front axle weight of 1700kg.
It's a similar story with the maximum permitted rear axle masses. The plated weights for the rear axle of the Transit Custom are slightly higher and are mostly aligned to the GVW of the vehicle. That makes its a lot more straight-forward.
Transit Custom 280s have a rear axle max of 1550kg.
The Transit Custom 300s have a rear axle plated weight of 1700kg.
And Transit Custom 320s have a maximum rear axle weight of 1900kg.
But there are some exceptions, as having a long-wheelbase 320 will drop the rating to 1850kg. So too will having an automatic gearbox. However, an L2 automatic still has a rear axle weight of 1850kg.
Now for the most important number of all, the individual payload for the Ford Transit Custom.
Maximum payload in the Ford Transit Custom second generation van line-up ranges from 848kg to a healthy 1416kg.
The smaller 280 Transit Custom vans have a range from 848kg to 1016kg.
Medium weight 300 Transit Custom vans range from 1048kg to 1178kg.
The highest payloads can be found in the 320 Transit Custom models where the range is from 1122kg up to 1416kg.
Payload ranges from 848kg to a massive 1416kg for the Transit Custom range of vans.
