Toyota revamps diesel Hilux with futurist new EV look

Toyota has just revealed its new electric pick-up truck but it's not the only model revealed today and the new Hilux 48V mild-hybrid gets a brand new look.

The Hilux 2.8D 48V was introduced last year, but will now get the new design adopted by the Toyota Hilux BEV with the important addition of a lot of holes in the grille.

The styling of the new electric Hilux gave an indication of what the 48V version might look like, but we can now clearly see that the added air flow needed for a combustion engine has made the front end a lattice of holes.

The electrified mild hybrid powertrain is set to become the core model for Europe when production of the all-new generation begins in spring 2026. The new Hilux 48V will be launched in the UK at the same time as the Hilux BEV.

There are no updates to the driveline used in the new 48V Hilux, it still pairs a 48V lithium-ion battery, positioned beneath the rear seats, with an electric motor-generator and DC-DC converter.

The setup works seamlessly with the 2.8-litre diesel engine, giving the Hilux smoother, quieter and more performance.

Unlike the electric Hilux payload, the 48V can transport more than one tonne. It also has a braked trailer towing capacity of up to 3,500kg, whereas the BEV has a towing capacity of just 1.6-tonnes, ensuring that at least one model retains the legendary abilities, including the Hilux's towing capacity, compared to the EV.

The motor-generator is mounted high on the engine, preserving the Hilux’s 700mm wading depth, as well.

The previous design 48V Hilux was also the first model to get the Multi-Terrain Select, which improves off-roading ability. There's a Panoramic View Monitor for easier parking and it will of course be available in the legendary Invincible trim level.

No word on pricing, but expect there to be little change to the current 48V Hilux price tag, when it arrives in Q2 2026.
