Ford Ranger PHEV towing capacity

September 30, 2024

Hybrid pick-up trucks aren't exactly common, in fact, there's just the one, so it's understandable that you're looking for the Ford Ranger PHEV towing capacity, just to find out what it's capable of.

Fortunately, the Ranger PHEV is very much geared up for towing. In fact, some might say that the 690Nm of torque created by the combination of the electric motor and 2.3-litre petrol engine makes it rather capable indeed.

Ordinarily, petrol engines aren't associated with towing. The torque arrives much later than in a diesel engine, which means that the raw pulling power isn't available early enough to get something heavy moving. You have to rev the engine too much, and you can risk spinning up the wheels. Powerful petrol engines don't mix all that well with towing.

However, the Ford Ranger PHEV has the added benefit of a powerful electric motor that introduces the torque almost from zero. That makes the Ford Ranger PHEV an excellent tow car, whether you're towing a trailer, a mini-digger, boat, or caravan.

Ford Ranger PHEV towing capacity overview

The Ranger PHEV is capable of towing an unbraked and a braked trailer, with an overall towing capacity of up to 3,500kg.

That's the maximum you can tow for this class of vehicle, so the Ranger PHEV is top of the class like most other pick-up trucks.

It's possible to tow a 750 unbraked trailer with the Ford Ranger PHEV, and the towing capacity for a braked trailer is 3,500kg.

That's the simple bit, but it gets a bit more complicated.

Towing modes

Ford says the Ranger PHEV can tow up to 3.5 tonnes, but states that this is when it is in EV Auto, EV Later and EV Charge modes.

That's essentially only when the engine is running. So despite the electric motor making it the perfect candidate for towing, it needs the power of the engine to do it. Most electric vehicles have severely reduced towing capacities compared to their diesel alternatives. In fact, to begin with electric vans didn't even have a towing capcity. and all that early torque from the electric motor means it’s an ideal companion for towing.
