The Toyota Proace van has a towing capacity of 2.5-tonnes or 2,500kg. This is the Proace's total towing capacity for a braked trailer, but for an unbraked trailer the Toyora Proace has a maximum towing capacity of up to 750kg.
The Toyota Proace was launched as the first van in Toyota's revamped line-up, replacing names like the Toyota Hiace.
The Proace was their version of the fleet medium van and their partnership with Peugeot and Citroen - later becoming Stellantis Pro One vans - meant that they had a ready-made van suitable for the segment. Becuase it's been designed by OEMs with years of van experience it's little wonder that they got a lot of things right about the Proace. That's why the Proace towing capacity is above average for a mid-sized van.
While those early versions were only capable of towing up to 2000kg, the design weight has since improved.
The latest model Toyota Proace can tow an improved 2,500kg which gives it a towing capacity greater than much of the competition.
Because it is a shared-platform van, built by Stellantis it does mean that is has exactly the same towing capabilites as the other vans that roll off the production line. So the Toyota Proace's towing abilities are exactly the same as the Fiat Scudo's towing capacity, the Vauxhall Vivaro towing capacity, Peugeot Expert towing capacity and the Citroen Dispatch towing capacity.
But, 2500kg is still only in the mid-range for regular towing with a car licence. You can find out more about van driving licence rules or there's a guide to the best vans for towing guide. That will tell you about the towing abilities of larger vans like the towing capacity of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van.
Naturally towing large, heavy loads means that you'll need a van that is up to the job, so chooseing a van that suits your towing requirements means you need to think about the engine power.
If you want a Proace van that is any good at towing it's best you choose one of the higher engine outputs.
All Proace vans have the same towing capacity of 2.5-tonnes. But, there are 125hp and 145hp engine powers, so if you want to tow a full trailer using the Proace we would recommend that you choose the more powerful engine.
Well, we've already said that the maximum is 2.5-tonnes, but actually it's a little more complicated to tell you what the entire limit a van can tow is, if it's already got stuff in the back.
That's because you need to consider the overall weight of the van which includes the kerbweight, your weight and that of any passengers, and any payload you have in the rear as well. All of these together contribute to the Toyota Proace van weight and affect its towing limit.
Combined they are known as the gross combination weight (GCW) or gross train weight (GTW) of the van.
The overall gross combination weight of the Toyota Proace is 5.6-tonnes, and to make everyone's life a lot easier Toyota has made all of their versions the same. So any variant will have a gross combination weight (GCW) of 5.6-tonnes or 5600kg.
The story doesn't stop there, though. The gross vehicle weight (GVW), which is the weight of the van plus the maximum permitted payload can not be more than 3.1-tonnes. Therefore it you add the maximum 2.5-tonnes allowed for the weight of the trailer along with the full Toyota Proace payload, you're still not going to exceed the GCW.
That's a good thing, so you have have a completely full Proace and still tow a maximum weight trailer.
But hang on a minute... There's always an exception to break every rule. The Proace van has a 1.5-litre engine option, which is lighter and have therefore been given a lower gross vehicle weight than the others. The 1.5-litre Proace van has a GVW of 2830kg, which means that it can carry less payload - so just something to be aware of.
As we always say, though, if in doubt check the van's official plates which will detail the exact weights the van can transport. They can normally be found on a small metal plate or a sticker either inside one door openings or under the bonnet.
As standard the Toyota Proace doesn't come with a towbar but you can specify one from the options list or return to your friendly local dealer to get one fitted.
If you do, you'll find that it comes with a standard ball and hook tow bar and a 13-pin connector plug for the light wiring on the trailer. You can expect a tow bar to cost around £700 for the Proace.
We hope you're not reading this bit because you've got your Proace stuck, but if you are, don't panic. The Proace has a hidden towing eye under the front bumper. It's attached directly to the chassis, so it's a good strong mounting point.
However, if you are going to use it, be careful that the rope/line/chain you use doesn't cause any additional damage to the Proace bumper when the tension is taken up.
